Lufthansa takes the field in support of diversity with a special livery for the FIFA World Cup. As is customary at major soccer tournaments, the airline presents a "Fanhansa" livery to adorn the aircraft in its fleet.
On the occasion of Qatar 2022, the choice also becomes "political." The Germany men's national soccer team, along with coaches and support staff, flies aboard the Airbus A330, which features on its side the inscription "Diversity Wins. Fanhansa" adorned with a drawing of people standing of different gender, age, race, nationality and ethnicity, created in collaboration with illustrator Peter Phobia.
In a press release, the company explains that it stands for openness, tolerance, diversity, and unity among people and that it welcomes everyone on board its aircraft regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, religion, nationality, identity, or sexual orientation.
The flight on which the national team is traveling is a scheduled flight to Dubai via Muscat, so it also accommodates other passengers who are not part of the DFB delegation.
The U.S. national team flies to Qatar aboard a private jet displaying a rainbow logo in support of the LGBTQIA+ community. Gegg Berhalter, coach of the U.S. national team, justified the choice by explaining that when you are on the world stage, it is important to raise awareness of equality issues.
Instead, the British national team flies aboard a Virgin Atlantic plane with the words "#Rainbow" and the LGBTQIA+ flag. After the World Cup, the plane will operate on other routes on the network, including New York JFK, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Miami.
The airlines of the major national teams involved in the World Cup take to the skies around the world the values of inclusiveness and equality to say no to gender discrimination and sexual orientation not only in the world of soccer but throughout society both in the air and on the ground.
