ITA Airways, new planes and destinations for 2023

Company aims to be the main operator for Italian mobility ...

ITA Airways is preparing to increase business with new planes to rejuvenate its fleet and new destinations to the U.S., Brazil, and the Middle East. The company announced this in a note confirming its growth commitments for 2023.

New planes

Next year, 39 new-generation aircraft will join ITA Airways' fleet, including nine wide-body (A330-900) and 30 narrow-body aircraft. Aircraft that will replace those of the previous generation. This brings the fleet to a total of 96 aircraft.

Thanks to the new purchases, the company expects a 73 percent increase over 2022 in the capacity of seats offered per km. Increase that will mainly affect long-haul routes where there will be 107% more seats.

The expansion of the fleet, they point out in the note, will lead ITA Airways to be the greenest airline in Europe in 2026 with 80 percent of new generation fleet resulting in a reduction of 1.3 mln tons of CO2 emissions.

New intercontinental destinations

Also planned is the opening of new intercontinental routes by expanding the network and strengthening its connectivity through the Rome Fiumicino Hub.

On board the new airplanes, with direct flights operated from Rome Fiumicino, people will travel to the U.S. with destinations to San Francisco and Washington starting in the summer season, and from November 2023 to South America, connections to Buenos Aires and São Paulo will be joined by Rio de Janeiro. The new A321Neo, single-aisle aircraft capable of long routes, will instead fly to the Middle East with destinations to Riyadh, Jeddah and Kuwait City.

"A little more than a year after the start of flight operations," they comment, "ITA Airways demonstrates that it has met its planned growth commitments for 2022 and laid the groundwork for a further increase in its market presence, reaching a wide range of destinations both intercontinental, international and domestic.
