Test flight of an eVtol, electric air cab ready to revolutionize city mobility ...
The Future of Mobility is already here. The eVtol (electric vertical take-off and landing) Volocopter 2X flies at Fiumicino Airport and Italy's first vertiport is inaugurated along with Volocopter's VoloIQ digital platform.
Performed for the first time in Italian airspace, the 5-minute flight at 40km/h at a height of 40 meters with a flight path of 8 of the eVtol promises to revolutionize city mobility.
The flight test of the first equipped eVtol opens the door to an advanced air mobility (Aam) system for all citizens. The initiative is a collaboration of Aeroporti di Roma, Volocopter, UrbanV and Atlantia, which obtained the necessary approvals from the National Civil Aviation Authority and the National Flight Assistance Board. The test was conducted one year after the first eVtol prototype was presented in Italy.
The aerotaxi will connect the airport with the city quickly and in an environmentally friendly way on both particularly busy land routes and over water flows. In Atlantia and Aeroporti di Roma's plans by the end of 2024, in the run-up to the Jubilee, the first Aam services will be activated.
The Fiumicino vertiport is the first Italian infrastructure dedicated to vertical flights. The area of about 5,500 meters, compatible with the main eVtols that will be certified in the coming years, consists of a final approach and takeoff area for landing and takeoff operations, a staging area, a covered hangar measuring 20 x 20 meters and about 6 meters high, several offices and a battery charging area.
It will host various types of tests for both flight and ground operations (turnaround, battery charging, etc.), with an electrical system designed and built to enable the break-in of various eVtol charging technologies (battery swapping, fast charging).
Located within a regulatory "sandbox" approved by Enac, it was designed in accordance with Easa technical specifications ("Prototype Technical Specifications for the Design of Vfr Vertiports for Operation with Manned VTOL-Capable Aircraft Certified in the Enhanced Category").
