Uniforms in history

The history of military uniforms has its roots in antiquity. Although there are no written records on the requirements for military uniforms, vases statues and frescoes testify how members of the military corps have always worn uniforms to distinguish themselves from civilians.

Records on the uniforms of the regiments of the Piedmontese army and later the Italian army can be found as early as 1659 when metal armor was discontinued in favor of loose clothing, vests, cloth breeches, long socks and low shoes with buckles.

As the centuries passed, uniforms were gradually transformed and refined. Under Napoleon they are glittering and exaggerated with customizations for every rank and purpose of use, from parade uniforms to daily uniforms. In 1905 the first major revolution: the gray-green outfit is adopted to meet the criteria of simplicity and adaptation to service requirements.

In 1934 the white summer uniform for officers and marshals and the black uniform for officers only, to be worn at receptions and soirees, were introduced. After World War II, the use of camouflage fabric became widespread.

The Uniforms in use today in the Italian Army are basically of four types: Ordinary, Service, Service and Combat and Ceremonial, for each of which there are two seasonal variants: summer and winter. Commonly referred to as the "camouflage suit," the Service and Combat Uniform is the most widely used; it consists of a unisex jacket and pants. Made in a camouflage color scheme for Italian and desert theater from tear-resistant fabric, it features a multi-tone masking pattern of green, yellow and brown and yellow white and brown.

What the uniforms look like

Military uniforms must perfectly combine fit and safety, be protective in the most extreme weather conditions or during operations in hostile territories and high-risk situations, but also represent the military corps with class.

Made of extremely lightweight fabrics and materials, they are waterproof breathable and tear-proof, resistant to fire, splinters and blunt materials, or made of anti-infrared radiation fabric.

Pants, shirts and T-shirts are made of 100% cotton fabric. Sweaters and pullovers are made of wool and acrylic blends. Jackets and coats are made of pure virgin wool cloth. K-way and other technical garments, on the other hand, are made of Polyamide/Elastane, Polyester or Aramid.
