Centenary of the Air Force: flying into the future

The events not to be missed to celebrate the Arma Azzurra ...


The Air Force celebrated the centenary of its foundation on 28 March. A significant milestone for the Arma Azzurra celebrated with various initiatives throughout the country. 

The celebrations started in the capital. An exhibition space has been set up in Piazza del Popolo Air Force Experience, open until 8 p.m. on 29 March. A real immersive village in the history of the Armed Force with aircraft on static display, experiential paths, educational and entertainment meetings, promotional stands, recreational simulators, projections, musical and sports performances. Visitors was able to get a close-up view of the aircraft on which the Armed Force's operational activities are based, such as the highly advanced fifth-generation F-35 fighter, the Eurofighter that patrols the skies over Italy and allied countries, the MB-339A with the prestigious Frecce Tricolori livery, the Tornado fighter and the HH-139, a versatile helicopter used for search and rescue.

"We are celebrating 100 years to thank those who have trusted us, those who have taken an active part in the Air Force and those who have supported us. It is a way to thank the people, the people the people, and to give a message to young people," General Goretti emphasised while speaking at the opening of the Air Force Experience. 

On the centenary day, a military ceremony took place in Piazza del Pincio, including a flyover of the eternal city and a performance by the Air Force Band. 

This was followed by the travelling exhibition that will stop in many Italian cities to tell the story of the Air Force's history, capabilities and traditions through a dedicated iconographic itinerary, with the aim of bringing it closer to the territory and citizens. 

The Italian Air Force Historical Museum (MUSAM) was opened to the public again after a careful restoration of the exhibition route. The appointment was on 18 April at the world's oldest seaplane airport, the 'Luigi Bourlot' at Vigna di Valle on Lake Bracciano. 

At Guidonia Airport on 27 April, a historical-museum will be inaugurated at the Divisone Superiore Studi ed Esperienze (DSSE), the most advanced scientific research and development centre for experiments on new aircraft. The wind tunnel, the double-return tunnel and the supersonic tunnel, the most advanced at the time in terms of power and size, will be visible. 

The Nuvola di Fuksas will then host the Italian AeroSpace Power Conference 2023 on 12-13 May. An event of international importance where academics, researchers, civil and military experts will discuss the future of aerospace, analysing possible scenarios and the evolution of its role in geopolitics. 

On 17-18 June, the 'Mario Bernardi' Military Airport at Pratica di Mare will host a large air show open to the public. A unique event in which one can experience the Aeronautica Militare by witnessing the flight of aircraft from the past and present, with the extraordinary finale offered by the spectacular aerobatic flight of the Frecce Tricolori. You will also be able to attend re-enactment tours and exhibitions and try out the many recreational simulators. 

There is a rich programme of Aeroclub d'Italia air shows scheduled from May to September. Dates not to be missed include: 07 May on the Andora Littoral, 4 June on the San Benedetto del Tronto Littoral, 2 July in Naples on the Pozzuoli Littoral, 30 July on the Reggio Calabria Littoral, 2 September on the Jesolo Littoral, and concluding on 24 September at the Trento 'G. Caproni' Airport. 

The Frecce Tricolori will fly the skies over the peninsula until 17 December. Among the events not to be missed: on the occasion of the Oath of the Air Force Academy on 5 April they will fly over Piazza del Plebiscito in Naples; on 13 June in Brescia on the occasion of the 1000 Miglia start; and on 3 September on the occasion of the F1 Grand Prix in Monza
